US National Academy of Medicine honours B-SMART partner María José Alonso

María José Alonso, Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) has joined the US National Academy of Medicine as International Member. After being elected one year ago, the official welcome ceremony for the Class of 2016 took place on October 14, 2017 during the 47th Annual Meeting of the Academy in Washington, DC.

Admission to the Academy is considered as one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. New members are elected by current active members through a selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health.

Dzau, President of the Academy, highlights that “Professor Alonso was elected because she has pioneered the development of nanotechnologies that help complex therapeutic molecules to overcome biological barriers. These nanomedicines have been assessed, at the preclinical and clinical level, for the treatment of various pathologies as well as for vaccination”.

The National Academy of Medicine addresses and advises on critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy to inspire positive actions across sectors. With their election, members make a commitment to volunteer their service in the Academies’ activities.

Prof. Alonso’s lab has pioneered numerous discoveries in the field of nanopharmaceutical technology and nanomedicine. The expertise and experience of her group is a particular asset for the B-SMART project and perfectly complements the consortium.
